May/June 2016 - Older Americans Month Theme: "Blaze A Trail"

When the first Older Americans Month celebration was held in 1963, there were 17 million Americans still living who had celebrated their 65th birthdays. In 2016, due to advances in health care, life style changes, availability of services and changing attitudes, there are more than 45 million people over the age of 65 and this number will almost double by the year 2030. The current population of older adults in the Richmond Metropolitan Region is 170,000 and like the national trend, this number will double to more than 340,000 in 2030. This year’s theme for Older Americans Month is “Blaze a Trail.” This theme emphasizes the value of raising awareness about issues facing older adults and caregivers by making communities livable for people of all ages. This theme also highlights the importance of providing opportunities for engagement and blazing new trails as we age by sharing knowledge, volunteering, participating in civic affairs and supporting a wide range of activities.

A variety of events and recognitions have been held to celebrate Older Americans Month and many will continue throughout the year. The City of Richmond and the Counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan have enacted proclamations that recognize older citizens and the contributions they make every day. These Proclamations also recognize older citizens as valuable resources. Thank you for joining in community activities and finding ways to celebrate and recognize older adults and caregivers throughout the year by “blazing a trail.”

We are in the process of “blazing a trail” as we seek input for the Agency’s Four Year Plan for Aging Services. We will be convening community sessions at 10 a.m. on the following dates:
• Thursday, June 2 at Friendship Café at Deep Run Recreation Center, Henrico
• Tuesday, June 14 at Friendship Café at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Powhatan
• Tuesday, June 21 at Friendship Café at Linwood Robinson Senior Center, Richmond
• Thursday, June 23 at Friendship Café at New Generation Church, Providence Forge

We hope you will join us for one of these sessions and “blaze a trail” with us. Thank you.
